Questions people ask

Can I use sweepstakes casinos legally in Alabama?

They are allowed but not licensed by the state, and the law can change quickly. Check each operator's list of excluded states. Always check the operator's licence on the regulator's public register.

Why do some sites show no bonus?

We only show an offer when its key terms are complete, checked in the last 30 days and within local rules. If any of that fails, we link to the site without offer wording.

Do operators pay to be ranked higher?

Commission and reader response can move the order, which we disclose above the list. Scores never change for money, sites under 7.5 cannot reach the top three, and paid placements are labelled Featured.

Which states have legal online casinos?

As of October 2026, regulated real-money online casinos are live in seven states: Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia. Maine has legalised them, but no operator had launched by late July 2026. In every other state, there is no licensed online casino option, though online sports betting is legal in more places.

How old do you have to be to gamble online in the US?

21 for online casinos in every state that offers them, and 21 for sports betting in most states. Pennsylvania, for example, sets 21 to match its land-based casinos. A few states allow sports betting from 18, such as New Hampshire, and most state lotteries sell tickets to adults 18 and over.

Why do gambling apps need my location?

Licensed sites can only take bets from people physically inside the state that licensed them. Pennsylvania, for example, uses GPS software and IP address checks to block play from anyone outside the state. If location checks fail, you will be blocked even if you live in a legal state, so turn off VPNs and allow location access.

Do I have to pay taxes on online gambling winnings?

Yes. All gambling winnings are taxable in the US and must be reported, even if you get no Form W-2G. From 2026, W-2G reporting starts at $2,000 for slot and bingo wins, and 24% is withheld on certain wagers when winnings minus the stake exceed $5,000. You can deduct losses only if you itemize, and only up to 90% of them from 2026.

Is it risky to use offshore gambling sites in the US?

Yes. Michigan's regulator warns that unlicensed offshore sites have no independent game testing, do not meet state data-protection standards, and ignore state self-exclusion lists. It also says players have no recourse through the regulator if winnings are withheld or an account is closed. Michigan issued 33 cease-and-desist letters to such sites in October 2026.

How do I check if a US gambling site is licensed?

Use your state regulator's list of approved sites. New Jersey's Division of Gaming Enforcement publishes approved internet gaming sites and says any site not on the list is not approved. Michigan's Gaming Control Board publishes its authorised online gaming and sports betting platforms. If a site is not listed, treat it as unlicensed.

Where can I get help with gambling in the US?

Call or text 1-800-MY-RESET, the National Problem Gambling Helpline, which is free, confidential and open 24/7, with online chat as well. It refers you to local support in your state. The older number, 1-800-522-4700, still works. Licensed sites also offer deposit limits and self-exclusion.
